About
The History
In August of 1917, in the trenches near Montiers, France –– with cooking
supplies running low –– two innovative Salvation Army lassies from the USA gathered up leftover flour and other ingredients to fry up a special treat for the battle-weary soldiers. These new morsels –– doughnuts –– were an instant hit with the thousands of American troops in Europe. When the soldiers returned home from the war, they brought their taste for doughnuts back with them… and the legend of the Salvation Army “Doughnut Girls” was born.
A Brainerd, Minn. woman named Signa Leona Saunders was among the first Doughnut Girls (right). Her family recently released 26 pages of her memoirs from World War I. Click here to read her memoirs in their entirety.
The “caring way” that was embodied in the Doughnut Girls’ devotion to supporting the troops in WWI lives on today in all aspects of the spiritual and social service work of The Salvation Army.
